"Visualisation of Headingley Enterprise and Arts Centre - HEART – at night"
HEADINGLEY ENTERPRISE AND ARTS CENTRE – WE’RE ON THE WAY!
Headingley’s biggest ever community opportunity is going ahead. We have the council’s
agreement to transfer the asset to us. The HEART project has attracted
massive community and political support, with investment so far from
local residents of over £105,000. This support and our plans for the
building persuaded Leeds City Council’s Executive Board to agree to lease
the school building to HDT over 125 years on a peppercorn rent and to loan
some of the capital funding needed for the refurbishment of the building.
We have also agreed with the Council that HEART will provide the Community
Centre provision for Headingley for the next 25 years.
THE PROJECT
Headingley
Enterprise and Arts Centre (HEART) will be based in the old Headingley
Primary School on Bennett Road, which was closed in 2006.
The refurbished building will provide:
-
performance, exhibition and events spaces.
-
a community centre service in conjunction with Leeds City Council.
-
a range of large and small meeting rooms.
-
a café with secluded outdoor seating area.
-
a business centre on the first floor, particularly targeted at the arts and media
industry, that should generate up to 10 new businesses a year.
THE IMPACT
Besides keeping the building in community use and introducing excellent new
facilities to central Headingley, we believe HEART will create a cultural
buzz to Headingley and provide a focal point for the whole community. It
will extend the local business base and encourage graduates to stay on and
make Headingley their permanent home.
